4 Natural Oils That Are Great For Your Hair

It’s no secret that natural oils are great for helping to nourish and moisturize our strands.

There are,  however, a plethora of natural oils to choose from so it can be difficult to ascertain which oils are best. Many naturals swear by coconut oil, but truthfully there are plenty of oils that can impart more moisture and health to your hair than coconut oil. The following list will provide you  with 4 alternatives:

Jojoba Oil

5 Natural Oils That Are Great For Your Hair

If you’ve got dandruff this is the oil for you. Jojoba oil is most similar to the oil your scalp naturally creates. It’s also high in fatty acids, Vitamin A, B1, B2, B6, and E. It’s a light oil, and can be rubbed into the scalp easily without leaving your hair feeling greasy or weighted down. This is the perfect oil to rub onto your scalp before shampooing or co-washing.

Peppermint Oil

Peppermint oil, aside from smelling like heaven, is known for helping with hair growth as it can stimulate blood-flow to the scalp. Peppermint oil should be mixed with a base oil, like olive oil or avocado oil before being applied to the scalp.

Jamaican Black Castor Oil

Jamaican Black Castor Oil is a thick, nutrient-rich oil known for it’s ability to rapidly regrow hair.  It can also help with eczema, dry scalp, and dandruff. It’s pretty magical, however, it’s one of the thickest natural hair oils. A little bit goes a long way. If you have fine strands, consider using it as a hot oil treatment before washing your hair so  you can get the benefits without the weight of the oil.

Olive Oil

Olive oil has so many great qualities for the skin and hair, it’s hard to know where to even begin. First, it’s important to note that you should always use the food-grade version, not the stuff you can find in your local beauty supply stores. The beauty supply olive oil is often low on olive oil and rich in additives that have few benefits to your hair. Stick to the extra-virgin olive oil you can find in your grocery store.

Olive oil is rich in fatty acids and vitamin E (both of which are great for hair growth.) It’s also  a great conditioner. Along with JBCO, Olive oil is one of my favorite oils for pre-pooing. Here’s how:

  1. Wet Your Hair
  2. Warm up the oil in the microwave for 20 seconds
  3. Apply to your hair from root to tip
  4. Put on a plastic cap and let sit for 20-30 minutes
  5. Wash + Condition your hair and you’ll feel the difference.

I also like to use a few drops of olive oil mixed with water (in a spray bottle) as a curl refresher.
